Enjoy our very own Chokka Trail

St Francis Bay Tourism

Three picturesque fishing villages, a rugged coastline, sand dunes as far as the eye can see, a tidal river, protected fynbos, wetlands and a visit to one of South Africa’s few working harbours are the ingredients that make up the Chokka Trail – slack packing with a difference.

Day 1: Arrive at the St Francis Links and leave your car under 24 hour surveillance. After a welcome drink, you and your luggage will be transported to the Oyster Bay Beach Lodge at 11:00, a mere 30 minute drive.

You will get a packed lunch to enjoy during your 4 hour warm up walk along the rocky shoreline to Thyspunt (12 km in total). Make sure you are back before dark, in time for Nick’s seafood potjie on the lodge’s deck.

Oyster Bay is one of the Eastern Cape’s hidden treasures, and the view from the lodge overlooks one of the most unspoilt beaches in South Africa.

Day 2: The day starts after breakfast and includes a moderate but slow walk along the Sand River, a dune bypass system with a view of the Baviaanskloof Mountains to the north. The challenge of this 16km stretch will depend on weather conditions of the day, but what a privilege to enjoy the white washed dunes, passing a few middens, leaving only your footprints behind.

Once at the Sand River Bridge, you will be transported to the Cape St Francis Resort, your host for the night. The Resort is situated on the Cape St Francis Beach, waiting to be explored on day 3.

St Francis TourismDay 3: The Resort team will take you to Mostertshoek, west of Cape St Francis, from where you will follow the winding footpaths along the rocky shoreline heading for the Cape St Francis lighthouse. After a visit to the SANCCOB Rehabilitation Centre, you will continue along the beautiful main beach via Shark Point to Port St Francis, the hub of the squid (chokka) industry. Here you will enjoy a Calamari tasting, before you continue on the Two Harbours Walk to the Heritage Eco Centre.

On this 15km stretch you will see a wide variety of fynbos species, a have a chance to see Southern Right Whales, dolphins, otters and small game while you hike the Coastal Cradle of Mankind. Once again you will pass huge shell middens, proof of the Koisan who lived here 120 000 years ago.

Brisan St Francis BayLittle Venice Adventures will fetch you from the Heritage Centre to visit Andejacht, a restored chokka boat before they take you to your hosts of the third night, Brian and Sandi from Brisan B&B, situated on the renowned St Francis Bay canals. Here (if you have any energy left), you can enjoy swimming, cycling, paddling and a canal cruise.

Day 4: Brian will drop you off at The Cove, from where you will walk along the Kromme and Sand Rivers, and through the St Francis Links, a world class Jack Nicklaus signature golf estate.

St Francis Links St Francis BayAfter completing the relaxing 10km walk through coastal forest and fynbos, our Chokka Trail comes to an end and we say goodbye after lunch in the Club House.

Optional extras to lengthen your stay in St Francis are bay cruises, deep sea fishing and boat whale watching from Port St Francis, as well as mountain biking, kayaking and a game of doubles squash, or relax with a treat in one of our top class beauty treatment centres.
