Micro-needling and Dermapen

Bard’au & Co explains what Micro-needling and Dermapen are and their benefits.

What is Micro-needling?

Bard'au and Co St Francis Bay
Micro-needling is designed to increase collageen and improve the quality of the skin”, says Richard A Korentager, a plastic surgeon who specialises in burn surgery and wound care. “we also use it to help get certain products more deeply into the skin like anti-oxidants and vitamin C. The goal is to smooth out areas where there’s scars, wrinkles and it helps with pore size. It’s a safe office-based procedure”

Micro-needling is a skin rejuvenating procedure in which tiny needles create punctures in the top layer (epidermis) of the skin whith the goal of improving overal texture and appearance.

Dermapen vs Dermaroller. What’s the difference?

Bard'au and Co St Francis BayWe’ve all heard of the term ‘micro needling’, indeed a lot of salons still provide micro-needling for skin rejuvenation using traditional ‘derma roller’ devices.

Technology has thankfully moved forward with the invention of the ‘Derma pen’, which is a much more advanced and effective method for skin rejuvenation.

Both Dermapen and Dermaroller are forms of micro needling used to stimulate the prodcution of new collagen by needling the skin. Microneedling causes micro-injuries to the epidermis, which signals the body to produce collagen to remodel the damaged area, which in effect rejuvenates the skin making your skin look younger and fresher and effective treats an array of common skin concerns such as acne scarring, lines and wrinkles, uneven skin texture, stretch marks, scars and more …

So, if Dermapen and Dermaroller are both forms of micro needling then what makes them so different?

1. More precise
Dermapen can easily treat those hard to reach areas such as around the eyes, nose and upper lip whereas it is more difficult to reach these areas with traditional derma rollers

2. Customised treatment
Needle depth can be adjusted with Dermapen whereas Dermaroller can only reach a single depth.
The benefit of adjusting needle depth allows us to cater to different areas of the face that require different penetration levels for best results.
This is extremely important when treating specific skin concerns such as acne scarring or delicate areas of the face such as the eye area

3. Less epidermal damage resulting in minimal downtime
The needles in the Dermapen penetrate the skin vertically whereas with dermaroller the needles penetrate the skin at an angle causing more chance of ‘tears’ through the skin leading to more side effects and therefore longer receovery time.

4. Fast treatment with minimal discomfort
As dermapen has a built in motorised system it is more precise and accurate on its depth of penetration and can penetrate the skin from up to 100 times per second with an adjustable speed whereas speed can not be adjusted with derma rollers as this is dependent on the handlers technique. Being able to adjust the speed minimises skin damage, pain and recovery time.
